Classic Color Mulch Description

Fresh wood in our classic color mulch, not poison!

Forest Commodities knows mulch! Our classic color mulch is hardworking. It doesn’t break down as fast as hardwood bark mulch, and we proudly manufacture it using fresh wood products from our mill. You will never receive recycled pallets or construction debris in our mulch. Pallets may have been used to hold hazardous products, and most likely have absorbed spillage from petroleum, chemical products and/or other toxic agents. These agents will absorb into people and pets as well as leaching into your yard.

Classic Color Mulch 101:

How long does colored mulch last?

  • Colored mulch maintains its color for 1 to 2 seasons. depending on the amount of direct sunlight. In fact, the wood fiber often deteriorates before the color fades.

Does colored mulch need more maintenance than raw mulch?

  • Nope! Every 4-6 months, rake the mulch to refresh the bed and provide aeration for plants. Then, reapply a couple inches annually.

Where can colored mulch be stored?

  • Bulk colored mulch should be stored on grass or bare soil surfaces. If the mulch is stored on concrete or other finished surfaces, put down a tarp to avoid discoloration.

Are there any benefits for my back yard?

  • In addition to the aesthetic appeal, colored mulch can be applied around plants, vegetables, and trees to help control weed growth. It also insulates the soil and help retain moisture.

Will the color wash off in the rain?

  • During the drying process, the colorant bonds to the mulch. Try to install the mulch when there’s no rain in the forecast for 24-48 hours. That way the drying process has time to complete once the mulch is spread.
* What is a cubic yard?

A cubic yard measures 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. A cubic yard of mulch will cover a 10 ft. x 10 ft. area, 3 in. deep. (3 in. is the recommended depth for spreading mulch.) So a good rule of thumb is to calculate the square footage of the area to be covered with mulch and divide by 100. For example, imagine you have a front porch with a flower bed on each side. Each side measures 15 ft. x 10 ft. (150 sq. ft.). The total area to be covered is 150 + 150 = 300 sq. ft. To calculate the number of yards of mulch required, divide that by 100. So you need 3 yards of mulch.
